Webmaster Tools :: Search Engine Checkers
- Supplemental Index Ratio Calculator
- Check to see if your websites are in the Google supplmental results. The supplemental results seem to be getting phased out. Your pages can end up in the "Supplementals" for a few reasons - unoriginal content, dupliate content, etc. Google no longer shows you their supplemental results, so this is the next best thing.
- Page Rank Checker
- This is actually a very handy tool. It checks your website's page rank on each datacenter that Google owns. If you're experiencing fluctation in your Page Rank, check out this tool to see what's going on behind the scenes.
- Key Word Suggestion Tool
- Type in a word or a phrase relating to your website and see how many searches are performed on average for each keyword relating to your website. Pick out the top ones and market towards those! This tool is perfect for when you need some inspiration for things to write about -- check out all the keywords. For example, when I searched "affiliate", the top result was "affiliate program" with 649 searches performed.
They have a plugin for Firefox browsers. - Search Engine Rank Checker
- Check to see if your website(s) are in Google, MSN, or Yahoo for specific keywords. Type in your domain name, then type in your keywords and wait. The result will show you your position if your website is in the top 100. If it is not in the top 100 results, you won't get to see your actual position and you'll just have to work harder to get your website up on the list!
Tool Bars and Extensions for Browsers
- Google Tool Bar
- FireFox :: This is the Google Tool Bar straight from Google. It allows you to see what your page rank is, has a quick button for backward links checking, and a few other neat functions that aren't quite related to website management! We don't recommend Internet Explorer for anything other than testing your cross-browser compatibility, but the Internet Explorer (IE) Google Tool Bar is available as well.
- Alexa Tool Bar: Sparky
- The Alexa toolbar lets you see your Alexa ranking -- and the ranking of every other page that you visit. When you have the toolbar installed, it also helps with your Alexa ranking, because the toolbar helps to gather the information it uses to suggets an appropraite ranking. Internet Explorer users click here.
Website Development Tools
- Color Schemer
- A heaven-sent tool that lets you pick one color to scheme for your website. Now, you don't have to guess which colors go together when you're designing your website.
- Open Source Web Designs
- The OSWD is filled with hundreds of free templates designed and coded by designers that are in it for the fun of it rather than in it for making a profit. There are some truly great designs on there.
- Why's Poignant Guide to Ruby
- Slightly off topic, but I like promoting this book... It's online, free, and written by the most cracked up person on the Internet. Why's guide is very informative and since it's a little messed up, it keeps you reading it. If you're not a programmer, it's best to skip this as it's a little technical for newcomers!
- Eclipse Workspace/IDE
- This is what I use along with the phpEclipe plugin when I'm coding, editing, or created pages for websites. It is not a creater of any sort -- it just does raw HTML, CSS, PHP... Raw source code.
